Andy Pafko, 4-time MLB All-Star, dies at 92 http://sports.yahoo.com/photos/andy-pafko-4-time-mlb-photo-184352849–mlb.html … via @YahooSports
As a kid in the Chicago area, Andy was my favorite player. My first game ever at Wrigley had the Cubs playing the Cardinals with Musial, Schoendienst, Slaughter et al. In the ninth inning the Cubs were down 3-1, 2 on, 2 outs and Pafko at bat. A tipsy Cards fan sitting behind us yelled: “Send him back to Boyceville!” Andy promptly sent one over the fence in left and onto Waveland Avenue. Cubs win. I’m dileriously happy, flying above the car back home with my Dad. I dumped the Cubs for the Dodgers when Andy was traded to Brooklyn. Then I followed him to Boston and Milwaukee with the Braves. Many a night I lay in bed with the cat’s whisker crystal set plugged into my ear bringing the games faintly to me from County Stadium. Andy Pafko. He was the greatest.
I kept telling myself, I need to somehow get ahold of Andy on the phone, as the years passed. To tell him how he thrilled me as a kid. Never did it. Shouldn’t have let it happen. I’m sorry, Andy. Thanks for the memories.
