This is an article from the NY Times Personal Tech Section by Kate Murphy on the subject of using video in your blog.  Right off the bat Kate reveals what you may already know: 90% of YouTube videos are painful to watch.  So, I immediately began to revisit my cringes at watching my own video introduction to this blog.  But another thing she implies is that almost everyone is not a hit the first time out of the box either.  So, there’s hope.

By the way, you certainly don’t have to harbor any thoughts about  going viral with your video.  Being passable is enough.

  1. Thanks for the info, Larry. Best wishes.

  2. Great article. Adds to the questions in my head. I have been thinking of adding some vlog readings on my writing site. Of course I have the fear that in reading I might end up being very boring.

  3. Hi Jon – You’re no stranger to video. I read somewhere about a blogger who Vlogs with readings from his books. Like you, I have my doubts, but you could just try it out with a short video 2-3 minutes and ses how it feels.

  4. Thanks for this Larry . It was a really interesting article. I think your point that being passable is a good one. That said “You want to be clean and concise, and if you don’t grab viewers in the first 15 seconds, they’re gone and aren’t coming back,” really kind of says it all too. It’s true of any blog though.
    We do what we can.
p.s. I’ve enjoyed all the videos of yours that I’ve watched, even if they’re not going to Cannes:-)

  5. Hi AK – I’ve been cringing at my Blog Intro Video ever since I first read this article by Kate Murphy, so last night I went after it with a meat cleaver and cut it in half. Also, I just had to get a better looking face on at the beginning. I like the idea of video for blogging. Do you have Skype? We could do an interview.
